Power of Influence

Writer's picture: Kori SpencerKori Spencer

Have you been influenced today? Many people will quickly shake their heads and adamantly say “no” to this question, but if those same naysayers have used social media today, then the answer is “yes”. Every day the average person views up to 5,000 ads via the internet. Ads are scattered throughout every webpage that is visited, on every social media timeline, and sometimes are hidden as random strangers on the street asking questions. In today’s world, nothing is off limits from being advertised.

ONLINE MEDIA

Social Media has become one of the largest platforms for influencer advertising. As people’s favorite celebrities post and market products that they use or are sent, they are acting as influencers. Companies are beginning to see the benefit in pushing their products to those that are popular via social media in order to attract a following, potential buyers. The online clothing brand “Fashion Nova”was deemed one of Google’s top searched websites of 2018 because of their influencer advertising. By working with influencers, models, artists, and entertainers Fashion Nova is now the number 1 clothing line for African-American fashion, an achievement that was attained by using social media for the benefit that it is.

HISTORY

Media Influence is not exclusive to social media it has been practiced in media forever. Television shows would use influencer appeal when inviting celebrities to act as cameos on the show. This crossover would potentially raise ratings for both the show and the network, and the fans of the celebrity and the show will potentially support both the celebrity and show. Radio stations invite the hottest artists or the most influential people of the time for interviews to attract listeners to the program. Influence can be as simple as a parent using a children’s show on good behavior to evoke a certain behavior form their child.

Influence is everywhere. From the shows we watch, the food we eat, the clothes we buy, and can even shape some of the ways we think. Certain brands become popular because of who it is associated with. Rihanna’s Fenty beautyline sold out in 15 minutes online and in stores within days.

LIFESTYLE

Where most makeup lines have to build that kind of action from their audiences, Fenty was able to accomplish this because of the beauty behind the brand. Kylie Jenner’s second lipkit sold out in seconds because of her level of influence. Both women managed to use social media and their world-wide influence to elevate their brands even more.

CONCLUSION

As you scroll through social media, take a look at the different products that are being advertised. Read the captions of some posts and take note of the hashtag ad (#ad) that is hidden amongst the many emojis. See if there is a sponsor tag in the location of products that have been shared down the timeline. So again, the question is asked. Have you been influenced today?
